We purchased a brand new stove in April. The stove does not work properly and getting any help from the service company or manufacturer is impossible. What do you suggest?

Here are some tips I've learned for getting good service.

  1. Don't start off blaming the servicer for your troubles. They didn't make the appliance and neither did anyone you will talk to on the phone.

  2. Don't demand something be done, ask if they can help. See note one.

  3. Don't expect to get the appliance replaced. The warranty covers repairing the appliance you purchased. (Unless the dealer has a money back guaranty, then talk to them.)

  4. The warranty covers 'defects in material and workmanship'. If it's working the way it was designed and you just don't like the way it works or if it's installed incorrectly, you're probably out of luck.

  5. If several attempts have been made to correct a legitimate complaint and failed, ask for a second service company to inspect it.

  6. Should the second servicer fail to correct the problem, this is when to ask for a replacement unit from the manufacturer.

  7. If this fails, write a letter (not email) to the manufacturer, the Better Business Bureau and/or your lawyer. And keep copies of all correspondence and notes of each phone call you've made and the names of persons involved. In most areas, there are laws that help consumers if they are stuck with a defective product.
