I purchased a gas stove four days ago as a Christmas present. The stove broke down on Saturday [Boxingday] and after repeated phone calls all over the country, I was told no one could come to fix it till Monday. Can I tell them to take this stove back and purchase one from a dealer who will look after me?

I'm not surprised you couldn't get service on a Saturday of a holiday weekend. Furthermore, I know of very few companies that do Sunday warranty service on any brand of home appliance, except for safety related repairs.

As for sending it back, unless the dealer has a money back policy, I wouldn't hold my breath. Most warranties usually state that the manufacturer will repair or replace any 'PART of the appliance that fails to function due to defects in material or workmanship' for the extent of the warranty. They don't usually say the whole appliance will be replaced at the discretion of the owner.

In regard to 'purchase one from a dealer who will look after me', most dealers have families that they'd like to spend time with on the holidays too. If there are any stores that are open holiday weekends, they're just trying to sell appliances. I'm sure they wouldn't have any of their service technicians sitting around the store waiting for something to happen.

I'm sorry you got stuck but let's be realistic. For many factory service companies, getting service within two weeks is considered fast. And if yours is coming on Monday, that's pretty darn good.

I hope the rest of your holidays are better. Take the wife and kids out to dinner and show them you're not going to let this ruin their holidays too.
